This work was actually part of a special three-volume installment of 11 Pop Artists showcased at five galleries, including the Leo Castelli Gallery. The series of exhibitions is known to have driven the awareness of what, at that time, was the new American Pop movement.
It's written that in the last installment, Lichtenstein showcased this more violent and dramatic work as opposed to his earlier subjects of comic-strip heroines. I imagine this drove a more intense, dynamic effect.
