Stephen Bezas
Love You, 2021Acrylic on canvas36 x 36 in. (91.4 x 91.4 cm)Copyright Upsilon GallerySigned and dated, versoThis series uses Stephen Bezas' colored sequencing within a grid, with everyday joyful objects like jellybeans, candy kisses, and lollipops. Bezas' gridded paintings reference earlier masters, from Michelangelo of the Renaissance era to Le Corbusier of modern architecture, who used a grid to achieve accurate drawings and diagrams. Bezas’ painstakingly detailed paintings of immediately recognizable objects that brought childhood happiness evoke a deep emotional engagement with a sort of algorithm of the human eye.
Bezas shared, "As an architectural designer, the use of grids as an organizing means has always played an important part in the planning of my design work and aesthetic.”
“The Word” series is defined by a 5 by 5 grid with 25 points or dots representing each letter of the alphabet, five across and five down, with Y & Z combined in the lower right-hand corner. The title of the work is the principle component in creating the composition within a grid. The depicted word or words are alphabetically coordinated by a various colored letters.Provenance
