Duane Bousfield: Hearts and Moons: Online Exhibition

Upsilon Gallery is excited to present “Hearts and Moons,” an online exhibition featuring small-scale paintings by Duane Bousfield. This collection reflects the inosculating nature of human relationships, both with one another and with the natural world. 

The exhibition highlights Bousfield's signature motifs of incised hearts and moon-inspired orbs. He uses multiple layers of color and carves sinuous lines that sometimes intersect or run parallel to each other. These intertwining lines lead to two recurring motifs: the timeless symbol of connection represented by the hearts and the gravitational, rhythmic balance reflected in the moons. 

In each of his paintings, Bousfield employs a unique process in which he layers paint to achieve the desired surface texture. Then with prepense focus, he draws directly into the paint to reveal the various layers. Each line shares a story of connection and separation, creating a metaphor for an evolving journey of complex human engagements.
