Osvaldo Mariscotti | 21 July - 4 September 2021

Upsilon Gallery is pleased to present "Overture", a new series of paintings by Osvaldo Mariscotti. This new body of work was roughly nine months in the making, and includes pieces made at the end of 2020 and the first half of 2021. At first glance this collection seems disconnected from the more structured and minimal pieces that the artist has become well-known for, however, as we look further, we find elements from previous stages of his development that suggest a return to his roots.

These paintings are made entirely with oils and a perfect combination of brush and palette knife - a tool the artist mastered early in his career and came to favor, as it allowed him to execute richly textured landscapes and shapes on saturated backgrounds. These images, inspired by nature but still abstract, invite the viewer to stare beyond the canvas, deep into what lies under the surface. Hints of his impulse permeate the works, filling them with energy which, combined with the unusual fluorescent palette, result in an unexpected and yet immersive visual experience.

Overture will be on view at the NYC gallery from July 21 until September 4.
