David Hockney
The Yosemite Suite
As one of the most influential British artists of the late twentieth-century, David Hockney has consistently explored the potential of new technologies in his practice. Beginning with his Polaroid collages in the 1980s, experiments with Xerox color photocopiers, fax machines, computers, and Photoshop soon followed suit. By 2009 Hockney had progressively incorporated the iPhone—the most ubiquitous of technological tools—into his practice, sending small digitally rendered drawings to friends and family. By 2010, the artist began using an iPad to produce enlarged drawings depicting scenes from everyday life. The series continues the lifelong exploration of perspective and pictorial space that has defined Hockney's legendary career.

For his blockbuster museum show "David Hockney: A Bigger Picture" at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 2012 Hockney dedicated the entirety of Gallery Three, the grandest and most imposing room at the Royal Academy, to his iPad drawings. The show traveled onward to Guggenheim Bilbao and Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Later, "David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition" was staged at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.
